Historic Malta Railway Locomotive Replica Unveiled at Reopened Attard Railway Station Garden – Multi Packaging

A beautifully detailed full-scale replica of a Malta Railway locomotive is now on display at Ġnien l-Istazzjon, the newly restored public garden at the former Attard railway station. The garden was officially reopened on Tuesday following a major €600,000 restoration project led by the Attard Local Council.

Faithful Replica Brings Malta Railway History Back to Life

The locomotive replica, crafted with remarkable precision by Stephen Bonello in 2016, stands as a tribute to Malta’s historic railway era. Bonello meticulously built the replica using original blueprints sourced by Paul Galea from the Malta Railway Foundation, with additional support from Multi Packaging Ltd. Just days before the reopening, the replica was assembled on-site and encased in a custom-built glass shelter to protect it for future generations.

Restoration Project Revives Attard’s Railway Legacy

The comprehensive restoration of Ġnien l-Istazzjon included the rebuilding of the original station building, which was destroyed during World War II. The new structure will serve as an educational centre and library, creating a vibrant community space that honours the station’s historic past.

Significant funding for the project was provided by the Planning Authority, which contributed €200,000 towards the station reconstruction and an additional €30,000 for the steel and glass casing housing the locomotive replica.

Remembering the Malta Railway

The Malta Railway operated between Valletta and Rabat from 1883 to 1931, offering a vital 30-minute connection across the island. Today, few physical reminders of this historic transport system remain, with a single surviving railway wagon displayed at the former Birkirkara station.

The reopening ceremony of Ġnien l-Istazzjon was attended by Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri, as well as Parliamentary Secretary for Local Councils Alison Zerafa Civelli, highlighting the importance of preserving Malta’s industrial and transport heritage.

A New Chapter for Ġnien l-Istazzjon

With its stunning locomotive replica, restored gardens, and newly rebuilt station building, Ġnien l-Istazzjon is set to become a key cultural and educational attraction in Attard. Visitors can now enjoy a peaceful green space while learning about the fascinating history of Malta’s only railway line.
